Honors Portfolio Requirements
All students are responsible for writing these entries and placing required writings in their portfolios in their English classrooms. It is the student’s responsibility to meet all required deadlines.
Portfolio requirements:
1. Analysis of a group project including the group’s agenda, plan, and the criteria for the analysis. The group’s project will center on exploring a community issue established by the group or recommended by the teacher. A specific goal must be formulated, worked towards and results presented before their peers.
2. Literary Analysis Essay based upon the piece’s use of language, literary devices, or other aspects of the author’s craft. Must incorporate the use of both primary and secondary sources when creating your evaluation.
3. Formal, multi-media presentation arguing a position for a political or social cause. You must include the text, PowerPoint and any other related files from the presentation.
Or
Speech with rubric on delivery. The topic will be based upon presenting an element of a literary text. Rubric will be focused upon word choice and verbal/nonverbal communication.
4. Multi-genre project that includes:
a. Poetic writing. Must include a one-page self-reflection on the editing process and how it affected the craft of your writing.
b. Narrative writing with editing, peer-review, and storyboarding. Experiment with at least three different techniques such as dialogue, pacing, description, reflection, and multiple plot lines, to develop experiences, events, and/or characters
Or
Original screenplay adaptation of a literary text. The primary objective is to capture the theme, tone, and emotional state of the text for the reader to experience. The process will include focused critiques from the perspective of the intended audience to guide revisions, improve voice and style in order to achieve intended purpose and effect..
5. Writing, Speech, or Presentation that analyzes and evaluates the persuasive strategies, tone, vocabulary, and/or syntax used in a text, picture, or video. Writing must consist of a minimum of a one to two page (three to four minute) evaluation.
6. Self-designed research project. Develop research questions to guide the project. The project needs to seek information or gather opinions in order to formulate a solution to an issue or concern. You must include a written explanation of the strategies you used for conducting research, an evaluation of how you dealt with biases, and the extent to which you explored competing viewpoints.
7. Persuasive Speech that proposes a compromise on a complex issue. Speech must be a minimum of 5-7 minutes in duration. Focus upon use of persuasive vocabulary.
8. College Essay. The writing must use a creative twist, device, or original approach to draw your audiences attention in an appropriate manner. Edit for an error-free response to the prompt. The writing cannot exceed one-page, typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman font. Include in the portfolio a one-page self-reflection of your use of the craft of writing to exemplify your academic prowess.
9. Resume. Follow correct formatting and edit for an error-free document.
10. Literature Review/Opinion writing based on informational text in response to an issue or problem. Examine the vocabulary in used in the context of the text to assist with meaning creation. Use appropriate APA formatting.
11. One written assignment from each class. The assignment should be something that has been graded and returned to the student. There should be six (6) written pieces to fulfill this requirement.
For seniors only:
12. Senior Project all requirements and guidelines will be given to you in April. The completed assignment will be due in May. Seniors will not be given any class time for this assignment.
One assignment from this portfolio must be completed, reviewed, edited, and rewritten using Google Docs or similar Internet tool. Documentation of submission, editing, and any other applicable times or information needs to be stapled to the corresponding portfolio item.
The completed portfolio score that includes evaluations for each writing sample will equal a fourth quarter test score.
